I didn't care for many of the stories - a few were okay, but none of them really grabbed me. I wish now that I would have stopped listening and gone on to a different book.
It is interesting to hear what writers have to say about the craft of writing (or is it an art?). I have just gotten a copy of On Writing by Stephen King, which I can't wait to delve into (but I must, because I'm in the middle of a book and then set to read another before I get to King). Although maybe I could read fiction and a book about writing simultaneously.
ReplyDeleteI agree there were some stories I didn't care for, but others I really liked. I do think audio really accentuates things which probably didn't help with this book.
ReplyDeleteSorry that you didn't enjoy this one. I liked it quite a bit (though there were a few stories I didn't care for). "A Study in Emerald" is my personal favorite -- nice blend of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and H.P. Lovecraft.

This one was hit-or-miss for me as well. I think that it was a collection of stories written for all different purposes so I wonder if some of them worked better in their original published settings (and not all side-by-side with other Gaiman stories).
ReplyDeleteI really wished I'd read rather than listened to this one-- I needed to skim some of the stories and decide if I wanted to come back and read them through.

While I am not a huge fan of short story collections, I still want to read this one. Annoyingly, it is one of the few by him that the library doesn't have! I don't know if I really want to own it, so I guess I am not sure what I am going to do about reading it.
ReplyDeleteNeil Gaiman is hit or miss, for me. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the stories. In fact, I think I love his voice more than his writing!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read much by Gaiman, only one book, but I am interested in reading other things by him. My kids loved Coraline, and I am pretty excited to read the Graveyard Book. Sorry that none of these stories excited you that much.
