by Kathy Hepinstall (read August 2006) Rating: 3.75/5This book is one in a three part theme-read I'm doing. My nephew lent me Nectar in a Sieve and I own Nectar from a Stone. It just seemed to me if I was going to read 2 books with the word 'nectar' in the title, then I should round it out and read 3, so I checked out Absence of Nectar from the library. The books themselves are not related in any way except they all contain the word 'nectar' in their titles. Three just seemed to be the satisfying, mystical , correct number if I was going to do a theme read. Two is not enough, four would be okay I guess, but three seems "just right". How's that for logic?
The Absence of Nectar is about a 12-yr-old girl, Alice, and her 14-y-old brother, Boone, who believe their religiously zealous step-father is trying to poison them. Their mother is emotionally weak with a great need for approval from her husband, so she turns a blind eye to her children's plight. To add to the weirdness of their lives, Boone writes letters to a teenage girl committed to a mental hospital for killing her parents.
I enjoyed this book, but don't think it's a must read. I wouldn't mind reading something else by this author.

Hello, booklogged! I like that you've chosen a theme for your reading, I don't think I've ever done that, but I might like to try. "The Absence of Nectar" sounds good amd I remember this book getting some really nice reviews when it first came out a few years ago. Thanks for reminding me that I wanted to read this book.
I think you'll enjoy the book, Lotus. Several summers ago I did my first theme-read quite by accident. I read 'The Secret Life of Bees', 'The Keeper of the Bees' and 'The Beekeeper's Apprentice'. It wasn't until I looked over my book journal that I realized I had read them all in a close span.
