Dragonfly in Amber (Outland#2)

by Diana Gabaldon
(read September 2006)
Rating: 4.5/5
Unfortunately, I find myself hooked on this series. The first book is Outlander and Dragonfly is the second. The reason I say, "Unfortunately I'm hooked" is because each book is so long. These books feature Dr. Claire Randall who travels back in time two hundred years and meets and marries the gallant Jamie Fraser, laird of Lallybroch. Twenty years after her first trip to 1743 Scotland, Claire returns to modern-day Scotland with her daughter where she plans to tell her the truth of her parentage.

The story is mesmerizing with it plot twists and beautiful language. I look forward to reading the next installment The Voyager.

So glad you're enjoying the series, booklogged! I have never read anything by Diana Gabaldon, but I have a friend who is a huge fan of the series. I enjoy novels with time travel as a theme, and I much prefer it when they go 'back' in time rather than into the future.

In reply to the comment you left --Thanks for the welcome! I'm impressed by how many books and links you have on your site. It will take a long while to explore.

I too like to read YA novels as well as adult ones.

I enjoy this series - I've read the first 2 a couple of times and the 3rd and 4th books once. It's been so long I want to re-read 3 and 4 before continuing, but I have to be in the right mood to pick up and "Big Ol' Book".

I read Outlander this summer and was glad I had the time off to do it. While I enjoyed the series, the length is a bit off putting. I wonder if I should try Book 2...you certainly tempt me. I like historical fiction, with bits of romance. (There's a name for it.)

All this praise for a series I haven't heard of.. but it has time travel and romance.. another I'm going to have to grab.

I've been hearing about this series for several years now, but like Suzi, I have to be in the right mood to pick up a "Big Ol' Book." I was going to have a BOB challenge, but maybe it'd be better to try to read one a month rather than a bunch all back-to-back. I need to remember to add Outlander to my BOB list, though, so I remember to pick up a copy.

Hi Booklogged,

I'm not a time travel fan, so this is one I don't have to add on. <--- Joy said with tremendous relief! :)

Okay, I have a question. I read Outlander and had a real love/hate feeling about that one. I never read on because the ending was so awful. The time travel aspect was very well-done, though, and the history incredibly vivid and believable. So, is the second one . . . well, gross? Disgusting? Extra violent? That ending just made me angry, but I seldom read long books and I remember gobbling Outlander up in three days.

Gee thanks, Booklover, for adding to Booklogged's high reviews of this series. I repeat...I do not like time travel, I do not like time travel, I do not like time travel.

In other words, I was content NOT adding on BOBs to my TBR list ladies!!! (big smirk to you both)

I'm loosing my mind - Can't remember how the first book ended and I only read it in June. Will have to look the next time at the library.

I do remember during the first book wondering if Claire was ever going to come back to the present day (1945) and her current husband. It's definitely NOT what you would normally think of as a time travel book - more a historical romance.
