Stone's Fall

by Ian Pears

My first foray into Stone's work was when I stood on my tiptoes to reach a fat book with an interesting title from a top shelf at the library.  An Instance of the Fingerpost proved to be worth the stretch so when I saw this hefty book by Pears I didn't have to be cajoled into reading it.

Stone's Fall has 3 different narrators who try to unravel the mystery of a wealthy magnate's death.  I enjoyed this book immensely,  Pears is a masterful storyteller, although the ending was a bit contrived the rest of the story was engaging.  The parts dealing with the high-priced madame were especially interesting and provided interesting insights into the business of making money.

I couldn't get into Pears' Instance of the Fingerpost. It was strange because I really liked some sections, but others... just left me bored. I think I should try one of his shorter mysteries first!

I liked Stone's Fall too. It was strange how he took a topic that should have been dreadfully boring (finance and business) and drew in the reader.

I've thought several times of reading one of his books but I've just never followed through. This one sounds pretty good!

I loved Stone's Fall and found myself lingering over the pages and taking each word in slowly so it wouldn't end. I did have to keep a cheat sheet of characters, though, to help me keep up with some of the story lines that continued through each time period. Sometimes I like to read without thinking, but other times I really like to be engaged in a book. This one was totally engaging.

I have a copy of An Instance of the Fingerpost, but haven't gotten a chance to read it yet. Good to know that both that book and this one are good reads. I will have to let you know what I think of this author when I do get around to reading some of his work. Glad you loved the book!

I really don't want to add a big book to my TBR list, but just may have to. This one sounds really good.

I loved his book An Instance At The Fingerpost, but there was a second novel of his (Dream of Scipio) that I couldn't get through, so I didn't know about this one. I've sort of laid him aside, but this looks intriguing.

This sounds quite interesting. . .I've never read Pears before, but I'm intrigued by the high-priced madame.

I'm glad to know that you enjoyed "An Instance of the Fingerpost". I bought it at a used book store because it looked intriguing several months ago but it's just sitting neglected on my shelf. I guess I better get reading.

Am I the only reader who hated Stone's Fall?
