by (someone I'm not going to name because I don't want adds for her books on my site. (read Aug 2006) Rating 2/5
I don't know why I bothered to finish this book! Yes, I do - I'd read reveiws ofher work that encouraged me to keep reading because it was bound to get better. There was too much language and vulgarity and some steamy sex. I like somethings to be hinted at and left up to the imagination. I suspect the mystery was okay, but it was obliterated by waste. I didn't like any of the characters, except for R**rk*, but what is he doing with Detective D*ll*s? Needless to say I won't be reading anymore books by her or any that are published using her pseudonym. Too many quality books to waste time on this trash. I'm not even going to post a picture for this one.

Way to can the trash!
Ouch! I believe I've only read 2 by 'that person'. It's not a genre I am drawn to, but for some reason I really enjoyed the one.
Isn't it difficult to set a book aside? Most of us tend to think...it's going to get better (it has to!). And, then, sometimes...it does! I think if it's really going badly (a true struggle to read) and we set it aside...we don't know what we're missing, so who cares? :)
Oooh - I had a book by this author on hold at the library and now I'm seriously tempted to cancel it.
I know what you mean by finishing a book even though you're not enjoying it. In my case it may have something to do with being taught as a child always to finish up my plate at the dinner table. It's only good manners. :-)
Hope school is going well.
Odd, I like these books. Of course, I skip the steamy sex because you can see it coming a mile away and the few I've read in her books are always the same, anatomically impossible. I just enjoy her take on the future and I think the mysteries are pretty good. And R***k is fine. But, you are right, there are much better books to be read. I read most of the Death series back in my less discerning days before I created "THE LIST". (imagine scary organ music)
Framed, I DID skip the sex scenes, but it was all the other vulgarity just randomly thrown in that was hard to take.
Myke, thanks for the pat on the back.
Joy, I've probably read other stuff that would make someone else raise an eyebrow.
L. Mama, a lot of people like her work. Maybe it was just timing or mood that this one hit me so badly. I don't usually like it when the main characters are raunchy.
I think you should post the title and author precisely for those people coming here to find out about the book before reading it... you would be doing them a great service in discouraging them!
Hello, booklogged! I have never read any of this author's books and after reading what you have to say, I'm not sure I want to start.
Kristina, the author is J.D. Robb who also writes as Nora Roberts. I'm not sure, but I thing as Nora Roberts she writes "more gently". Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Lotus, I say, "Dont' bother."
Hmm...I really enjoy this series and I've read all...what? 22 books? But I do realize that not all things are for everyone. Sorry to hear this was one of those things. I think the language stems from the fact that the characters (or least most of the characters) are cops and the books involve crime. It'd be kind of unrealistic I think, for a criminal to mutter "oh darn" when they're caught or when the cops stumble over a body. lol. But I do like the mysteries and the character development. I think that's what I like most about the series. Robb does a really good job with developing her characters. Or least for me. Good luck with your next read. :-)
J.D. Robb is the only romance-type author I will read. They are not stellar, and not must reads, but I think I like the futuristic and stuff. With this book I cover mystery, romance, and supense. Then, I can say I am a very well-read reader. lol
I still haven't made it through a book by either of this author's personas. I've attempted several titles and I guess I must be missing what other people find appealing. Her books are among the few I haven't made it through more than a chapter or two before I couldn't go further, so just not my thing. One made my skin crawl. Too icky.
I read two books in that series and two was more than enough.
I'm proud of you for giving the book a try. Sometimes a taste is enough! :-P Maggie
