A Spot of Bother

by Mark Haddon

A very appropriate title - I felt this book was pretty much a spot of bother. I just about gave up reading it, but I read someone's review that said to keep reading. Why did I let someone I don't even know tell me to continue reading a book that I wasn't very interested in and parts of it were disgusting. So I did finish it and I actually enjoyed the end immensely and not just because it was over.

Why did I read this? I read his first book An Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and loved it. This was entirely different and different is good, usually.

What did I like? The ending. I liked how it turned out for the characters and I really liked the event that happened at the end.

What I didn't like? I really didn't like the explicit sex scenes between the gay guys. And I didn't really like Jean, the wife. I did like George even though he's a bit crazy. Maybe that's why I liked him - he's old and off his rocker.

If you're planning on reading this, don't let my impressions sway you too much. I may just not have been in the right mood. The storyline was good and the characters were well developed.

Looks like I can probably pass on this one!

I'm passing, too. I'm not big on explicit sex of any kind. Sorry it was a disappointment because I liked An Incident of a Dog in the Nighttime so much.

I haven't read Curious Dog yet. So I'm not sure about this one. But at least you got a good ending out of it!! The least you can ask for with a book you don't really like!!

3M, wise decision.

Jenclair, Dog in the Nighttime was presented so cleverly, wasn't it?

Stephanie, Curious Dog is short, but powerful. I think you'll like it.

The ending was the best and not just because it was over? Damned by faint praise indeed.

I'll probably be skipping this one too. I can't even watch kissing scenes in movies.

I don't remember any explicit sex scenes between any characters, but that could mean many things. It could mean my memory sucks. Or that the sex scenes were too boring to remember. Or that we have different ideas of what's explicit. Or that I was being distracted by kids during that section, etc. Who knows! The fact that I also can't remember the ending means it was probably reason 1, that my memory sucks!

Hi Booklogged! Thanks for visiting my blog! :) I will add your link onto my blogroll...it's always great to read another book blog!

I have seen this book around and almost picked it up, well after reading your review I'm just glad that I didn't.

I doubt I will be picking this book up. I loved the premise of Curious Incident, and felt he did a great job portraying autism, but I just can't stand Mark Haddon's writing style. I'm not sure that changes very easily.

I didn't really care for his first book, so I have had no interest in this one.

I bought this book at a church sale! But honestly, after reading your review, I don't think I want to waste time reading it. I'll be happy to give it away to anyone that wants to read it.
