Rises the Night

by Colleen Gleason
By the cover you can tell that this book is a romance and those who know me well know that I don't care for romances. And yet I LOVED this book. LOVED it. I prefer to think that Gleason's vampire series belongs in the suspense/thriller genre. This is not total rationalization - Rises the Night is a gripping, page-turning, nail-biting read.

Victoria Gardella is a venator, whose job is to help rid the world of vampires. She never goes anywhere without several wooden stakes, a vial of salted holy water, and a silver cross. There are two men in her life, Max and Sebastian, who we met in the first book, The Rest Falls Away. These men are not only handsome, they are mysterious. I was constantly wondering about there loyalties and agendas.

Victoria faces some especially challenging and horrifying experiences. The action is non-stop and really quite terrifying. I am in love with this series. I mean to tell you, this book rocks! Gleason has a gift, her writing is beautiful and tight. The characters are complex, the story is rife with twists and turns.

Rises the Night will be released in stores on June 5. I know, I know that's another 6 long weeks of waiting. But to offset that bad news I have some really great news: You could win a free copy of this book before the release date. Keep watching my blog. I'm going to hold a drawing for a signed copy of Rises the Night. The drawing will be held on May 20. I'll get a post up announcing the contest in a week or two.

I'm definitely going to add these books to my TBR list. I wonder when I will ever get to read something from that list?

I'm a guy, and I loved the The Rest Falls Away. Who would've thought that I would ever like a romance, but I agree with you..I see this as more of a suspense/thriller/horror novel with some definite romance in it. Just not the kind of romance I thought would would be in a "romance novel." Can't wait for Rises The Night!

Another romance-for-non-romance-readers that you might like is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I was resistant til 3 people kept insisting I try it, and then I was hooked!

you know what, I read a romance once and loved it. Not that I've read one since. And despite your great review, the mention of vampires brought back shudders when I recalled slogging my way through Interview With a Vampire... but I hear Anne Rice has changed her tack lately...

Marg and Quixotic, you're going to enjoy this one.

Aly and Cassie, you are welcome to borrow my copies when you get around to it.

Colleen, you are so welcome. Thanks for writing such terrific books.

Chris, there's so much adventure in these books, isn't there?

Dewey, funny you should metion the Outlander series. I just recently finished the 3rd in that series. I love them, too.

Arukiyomi, I don't read vampire books either, although I did read Dracula for the RIP challenge in Oct, then read Colleen's 2 vampire books, and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight. It totally blows my mind that I've read that many vampire books and all in less than 6 months. No more vampire books for me - until Colleen's next one comes out. You might try the The Rest Falls Away. I think you'd be surprised.

Ahh! I loved reading your review booklogged! You did a perfect job of driving me crazy waiting for the sequel. I even left a slot in my crammed-full challenge schedule so that I can read it!

I don't like books that are strictly romances too much either and TRFA felt much more like suspense /thriller to me too.

So glad to hear that I won't be disappointed!

You know what... I forgot to mention what the romance was that I loved: The Far Pavilions by MM Kaye. Definitely one for the Chunkster Challenge!
