by Shannon HaleBooklist calls this a stand alone adventure. I think it could be read on its own, but I think it works better to read it after Goose Girl and Enna Burning.
Razo is the main character and is one of the ambassadors of peace to a country that was just defeated by his country. He is in a difficult position and he has quite a bit of self-doubt, but he tries to push himself into the role his leader has for him.
This is not my favorite of Shannon Hale's books, but it was still very good. Her writing is engaging. I often catch myself mulling over an arrangement of words that caught my attention. Unfortunately, I didn't mark any, for which I'm kicking myself. That's one of the highlights of finishing a book for me - to go back and read certain passages. It helps review certain aspects and events of the story.

I haven't read this one, but I totally agree about her arrangement of words. Sometimes they really pack a punch.
I am looking forward to reading The Goose Girl in the next two months and it will be my first by Hale so it's good to see what her other books are like. I know what you mean about not making a note of passages that catch your eye at the time of reading them. I do sometimes, but don't always remember.
It's so funny how the book blog world works. I had never heard of Hale until just within the last week or so when reading everyone's potential lists for the Once Upon a Time Challenge II. Goose Girl seemed to be on just about every other list!
I'm going to be looking for all three next trip to the library!

I agree. River Secrets was not my favorite Hale book either, but still wonderful. Razo really grew on me the more I read about him.
I read this one last week and now I'm wondering where to go next with Hale. I read the whole trilogy. What would you recommend I pick up next?
